TAWANI Foundation Awards $1M to the Greater Chicago Food Depository
The TAWANI Foundation announces it has awarded a $1M grant to the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD). Since 1979, the Food Depository has worked to provide food for those at risk of hunger in Chicago and Cook County.
"In these trying times, when countless individuals and families find themselves facing challenges due to economic hardships, the work of the Greater Chicago Food Depository is even more vital," said Colonel (IL) Jennifer N. Pritzker, IL ARNG (Retired), founder of the TAWANI Foundation. "We are proud to support the organization in advancing its mission while providing much-needed sustenance and resources."
To achieve its mission, the GCFD works in partnership with a network of community-based organizations and programs - food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, mobile distributions, and others.
In 2019, the organization launched the Nourish Project aimed at increasing the availability of healthy food and addressing the root causes of hunger, including inequities that have affected communities for generations.
"The generosity of the TAWANI Foundation supports the Greater Chicago Food Depository's mission to end hunger during a time of sustained high need," said GCFD President and CEO Kate Maehr. "Demand for food assistance remains above pre-pandemic levels, as one in five Chicago area households experiences food insecurity. We are incredibly grateful for the partnership and commitment of the TAWANI Foundation and the impact this grant makes for children, families, older adults, veterans, and all of our neighbors who face hunger."
