Geneva Girl Scouts to Take Action for the Environment on Arbor Day, April 27!
Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois' Geneva Service Unit will take part in a tree planting ceremony outside of Geneva City Hall, 109 James Street, this Arbor Day—Friday, April 27, at 3 p.m. Girl will help shovel soil to plant a tree and install a marker to commemorate their efforts as part of a dedication ceremony.
The tree planting ceremony is the final step in the Service Unit's “Geneva Forever Green” service project. Inspired by a 100th Anniversary Girl Scout exhibit at the Geneva History Center, 16 troops in the Service Unit pledged to be a part of a Take Action Project benefitting their community. The girls decided to help the community recover from the tree devastation caused by Emerald Ash Borer Beetle (EAB) infestation.
The goals of the project were to plant at least one tree on a public parkway in Geneva and inform the community about the EAB problem and how to stop it. Girls achieved these goals by collecting change for 100 good deeds/acts of kindness in the spirit of the Girl Scout Promise and Law and/or donating a portion of their troop Girl Scout Cookie Program proceeds to the tree fund.
Girls also created posters for a public display to inform others of the EAB problem and encourage them to take action and participated in additional Forever Green initiatives developed by Girl Scouts of the USA, including reducing plastic waste, creating rain gardens and participating in Earth Hour.
Working together, girls were able to accomplish these goals and donated enough money to plant several trees on public parkways! The Geneva Forever Green Tree the girls will plant at City Hall will be a long standing symbol of their success.
